Mark it once — and provenance, credit, and misuse become one ledger.
Once a paper is public its provenance comes apart: crawlers strip the byline,
attribution is a courtesy nobody owes, and “they trained on this” is a hunch you can’t prove.
Mark the work on the way in and the trail holds — who read it, what derives from it, what that
reuse is worth. Crediting the source stops being a tax and becomes a receipt the next author wants.
The green track
Compliance costs one call. Declare what your work builds on; you get a signed
certificate and a priority timestamp, and upstream the author reads the reuse as credit,
not theft. The cheaper path is the honest one.
The red track
Defection leaves a trail. The marks, the access log, and a likelihood-ratio protocol
turn “they copied me” from a hunch into a number you can defend — and the arithmetic is
built to fail closed, never to reach. Provable, or private.
